Lesson 5 – V: Voyage into Volt: How Do Solar Cells Turn Light into Power?
V: Voyage Into Volt
What If Your Power Source Were Sunlight?

Imagine holding a small solar cell in your hand. It looks simple — a flat, dark square — but it can run a circuit without any battery at all. The catch is that, unlike a battery, a solar cell’s output is not fixed. Cover it, tilt it, or move it into shade, and what it produces changes.
In Lesson 4, your power source was a battery, and you measured its voltage and current. Today your power source is sunlight. You will measure how much power a solar cell produces under different light conditions — and that is exactly why measuring matters: solar power changes with conditions, so engineers must measure it before they can rely on it.
Check Your Understanding
A battery gives a steady voltage until it runs down. Name one thing about a solar cell’s power that you think will be different from a battery’s — and why.
