Lesson 6 – V: Voyage into Volt: How Do We Build and Use Photovoltaic Panels?

V: Voyage Into Volt

What Makes One Solar Panel Better Than Another?

Exterior photo of a modern multi-story building with a stone and glass facade, angled metal louvered sunshades, and a sloped white roofline, set against a bright blue sky. A grassy lawn with young trees and a paved walkway lies in front, with another contemporary building visible in the background to the left.

Imagine you are helping design a solar system for a school. Two panels are available. One is rated at 400 watts, and the other is rated at 380 watts. At first, the 400-watt panel might sound better. But what if the school is in a very hot place? What if roof space is limited? What if one panel keeps more of its power in hot weather?

These are the kinds of questions engineers ask. A solar panel is not just a flat object that makes electricity. It is a system made of many smaller solar cells working together.

Check Your Understanding

Check your understanding: If you had to choose between a 400-watt panel and a 380-watt panel, what information would you want besides the watt number?
